ALL INSIGHTS

If you haven't seen them yet, Google is now showing "Mega Sitelinks" for sites where there is "navigational intent".

This means that is someone is obviously searching for your brand, and Google can link your site to your brand, you'll get the mega links. I'm sure as time goes by Google will be showing these mega sitelinks for searches beyond brand searches as well, so you might as well start evaluating your megalinks now for quality.

How Does This Apply to Spammers?

This means that brand results for searches will take up the majority of the space in search results, with an added benefit of providing shortcuts to content within the resulting sites. With this precious real estate being gobbled up by actual results, the spammers end up pushed down the page and visitors get better results in the long run.

What Should You Do Today?

Do a brand search for your site. If you show up with megalinks, review them to determine if they meet up with your expectations. If you don't show up - investigate why. Try searching first for your brand, then for just your domain name. If you don't appear for either, I'd love to hear from you. Email me at bill@goupward.com with your domain name and I'll take a look. More out of morbid curiosity than anything, but also so I can help if possible.

If you DO appear for your brand but your megalinks are not there, you could have a technical issue holding you back. It might be something simple that you could ask a developer to take a look at. If you show up for your brand but your mega links aren't to your liking - change them!

If your brand is comprised of keyterms in your industry ("home mortgage" for example) then you'll still have to wait a while before you get the megalinks as Google is going to be pretty conservative regarding who gets them for a while. Even this phrase shows megalinks for their domain (just add the dot com to the end and remove spaces). We have seen some brands that are fairly common words mega-up already however, so there is hope for the common-term branders out there.
